Bisque firing and glaze firing: what each stage is doing

The two common firings are not interchangeable heat treatments. Bisque turns fragile dry clay into porous ceramic; glaze firing matures the body and coating toward their designed final state.

Bisque makes handling and glazing practical

Bone-dry clay still contains chemically bound water and combustible material. During bisque firing these leave over a wide temperature range while the body becomes ceramic. The result is strong enough to handle but usually porous enough to accept a water-based glaze suspension.

Early heating must suit the thickness, dryness, clay body, and kiln. Steam formed inside damp work can break it, and fast temperature change can stress thick or uneven forms. Do not copy a schedule without comparing it with the clay supplier's guidance and the kiln manufacturer's instructions.

Glaze firing develops both surface and body

In a glaze firing, the coating melts and changes while the clay body continues to sinter or vitrify. The intended endpoint is a relationship between glaze, body, atmosphere, temperature, and time. A glaze labelled for a cone range is not guaranteed to fit every clay fired to that cone.

Heatwork combines temperature and time. Witness cones placed where they can be read show what the ware experienced more directly than the controller's peak number alone. Record their bend along with the programmed schedule and kiln location.

Why one bisque temperature is not universal

A more porous bisque can absorb glaze quickly; a denser bisque absorbs more slowly and may be tougher to glaze evenly. Clay and glaze manufacturers may specify different bisque ranges for a reason. Changing bisque temperature can alter application thickness even when the glaze recipe stays the same.

Make a small, labelled comparison before changing a full studio workflow. Measure or standardize dipping time, specific gravity where appropriate, and the thickness of the test tile. Otherwise several variables move together and the result teaches very little.

Let the kiln finish the cycle

Cooling is part of the firing. Opening a hot kiln can damage ware, elements, and kiln furniture, and exposes the operator to extreme heat. Some glazes also develop their surface during controlled cooling. Follow the kiln manual and studio procedure rather than judging readiness only by the controller display.

Once cool, photograph the witness cones and representative results beside their labels. Good firing records turn variation into evidence instead of folklore.
