Pottery studio dust control: design the routine before sweeping

Dry clay and many ceramic materials can release fine silica-containing dust. The safest routine prevents dust from becoming airborne and removes settled material with wet or suitably filtered methods.

Prevent dry material from spreading

Keep powdered materials in closed, labelled containers and handle them only in a space designed for the task. Clean spills while they are still damp when that can be done safely. Allowing scraps and slurry to dry on tables, bats, aprons, and floors creates dust every time those surfaces are disturbed.

Separate clean and dirty storage. Wash reusable studio clothing rather than shaking it out, and do not carry dusty footwear through living areas. Food and drink do not belong in material handling or glazing areas.

Clean without putting dust back into the air

Avoid dry sweeping and ordinary household vacuums, which can redistribute the finest particles. Use wet wiping or wet mopping, refreshing the water before it becomes a source of residue. Where vacuuming is part of an assessed control plan, use equipment designed and filtered for the hazard and maintain it according to the manufacturer.

Work from high surfaces to low ones and include shelves, window ledges, kiln furniture storage, and the underside of work tables. A short daily cleanup prevents a large weekly job that is harder to control.

Use ventilation for the source it is meant to control

Kiln ventilation and dust extraction solve different problems. A kiln system is designed for heat and firing emissions; material mixing may need local exhaust at a different location and airflow. General room ventilation alone may move contamination through the room rather than capture it.

Ventilation design depends on the building, equipment, materials, and local rules. Use qualified advice, follow kiln and ventilation manufacturer instructions, and ensure exhaust does not enter windows, air intakes, or occupied spaces.

Treat guidance as a minimum, not a diagnosis

This article is general education, not an exposure assessment. Review safety data sheets for every material and follow workplace rules that apply in your location. If a studio employs people, teaches classes, or mixes dry materials, formal professional assessment is especially important.

A good safety system is visible in the room: labelled materials, cleanable surfaces, written routines, maintained controls, and time reserved for cleanup. It should not depend on everyone remembering an unwritten exception.
